How COMSATS internal assessment marks add up

A COMSATS course grade does not come from one exam. It comes from four weighted parts. In a theory course, quizzes carry 15%, assignments 10%, the midterm 25% and the final term 50%. Each part is worked out as a percentage of its own total first, then multiplied by its weight. So four quizzes out of 10 and one quiz out of 40 both come out right without you rescaling anything.

A course with a lab is two assessments combined into one grade. The lab has its own weightages: assignments 25%, midterm 25% and final term 50%, with no quizzes. Theory and lab are then combined by credit hours. A 4-credit course is 75% theory and 25% lab. A 3-credit course is 67% theory and 33% lab.

What you get is your aggregate internal marks out of 100. The calculator maps that through the COMSATS grading bands to show the letter grade and grade point you are on track for. Fill in what you have so far and leave the rest blank to see where you stand. Or put in target marks for the final to see what you would need.

The Formula

Component % = Σ (Obtained) ÷ Σ (Total) × 100Theory % = Quizzes×0.15 + Assignments×0.10 + Midterm×0.25 + Final×0.50Lab % = Assignments×0.25 + Midterm×0.25 + Final×0.50Course % = Theory × w + Lab × (1 − w) // w = 0.75 at 4 CH, 0.67 at 3 CHGrade = COMSATS band for Course %

A part you have not entered scores 0. It is not dropped from the average. That way a course shows where you really stand, including everything still unmarked, rather than an optimistic partial score. Enter expected marks in the final row to see the finished picture.

Worked Examples

Example 1: a 3-credit theory course, no lab

Quizzes 34/40 across four quizzes, assignments 45/50, midterm 18/25, final 40/50.

Quizzes (15%)34 ÷ 40 = 85% → 85 × 0.15 = 12.75
Assignments (10%)45 ÷ 50 = 90% → 90 × 0.10 = 9.00
Midterm (25%)18 ÷ 25 = 72% → 72 × 0.25 = 18.00
Final term (50%)40 ÷ 50 = 80% → 80 × 0.50 = 40.00
Aggregate marks12.75 + 9.00 + 18.00 + 40.00 = 79.75
Result79.75/100 → B+ (3.33), three-quarters of a mark short of an A-

Example 2: a 4-credit course with a lab

The same theory result as above (79.75), plus a lab: assignments 46/50, lab midterm 17/20, lab final 44/50.

Lab assignments (25%)46 ÷ 50 = 92% → 92 × 0.25 = 23.00
Lab midterm (25%)17 ÷ 20 = 85% → 85 × 0.25 = 21.25
Lab final (50%)44 ÷ 50 = 88% → 88 × 0.50 = 44.00
Lab total23.00 + 21.25 + 44.00 = 88.25
Theory share (4 CH → 75%)79.75 × 0.75 = 59.81
Lab share (25%)88.25 × 0.25 = 22.06
Result81.88/100 → A- (3.66). The lab pulled the course up a full grade

COMSATS University Islamabad Grading Scale

Your aggregate internal marks are read straight off these COMSATS bands, the same bands the COMSATS GPA calculator uses. This is what tells you that 79.75 is a B+ and 81.88 is an A-.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the COMSATS internal assessment weightages?

For a theory course: quizzes 15%, assignments 10%, midterm 25%, final term 50%. For a lab: assignments 25%, midterm 25%, final term 50%, with no quiz weightage. These are the weightages this calculator uses. If an instructor announces something different, your course outline is the authority.

How are theory and lab combined into one grade?

By credit hours. A 4-credit course with a lab is 75% theory and 25% lab. A 3-credit course with a lab is 67% theory and 33% lab. Anything else falls back to an even 50/50 split. Tick 'Has Lab' on the course and the calculator applies the right split from the credit hours you entered.

Do I have to enter every quiz separately?

It is easier if you do, but you do not have to. Quizzes are pooled. The calculator adds up all the obtained marks and all the totals before working out the percentage. So four rows of 8/10 and one row of 32/40 give the same 15% contribution. Use whichever matches how your marks were announced.

Why does my predicted grade look low before the final?

Because the final term is half the course, and an empty part scores 0 rather than being left out. Before finals, even a strong student usually sits below 50. Enter the marks you expect in the final row to see the grade you are really heading for. That is the number worth planning around.

Is this the same as the COMSATS GPA calculator?

No. They are two ends of the same course. This one turns raw quiz, assignment, midterm and final marks into your internal aggregate and the letter grade it produces. The GPA calculator starts from letter grades you have already been awarded and turns them into an SGPA and CGPA. Use this one during the semester and the GPA calculator once results are out.

Will my instructor's marks match this exactly?

The weightages are the standard COMSATS ones, but individual courses can differ. Some instructors weight a project, drop the lowest quiz, or scale a hard paper. Treat the result as a good prediction of the standard scheme, and check your course outline for anything unusual before you rely on it.
