How to work out the GPA you need at COMSATS
Planning backwards from a target CGPA is easier once you think in grade points instead of averages. Your CGPA is total grade points divided by total credit hours. So a target CGPA is really a target number of points. The gap between the points you have and the points you need is what your remaining credit hours have to produce.
Enter the credit hours you have finished and the CGPA they gave you, the CGPA you are aiming for, and how many credit hours are left. The calculator shows the full working: current points, target points, the gap, and the GPA that gap works out to.
COMSATS grades on a 4.00 scale, so a required GPA above 4.00 cannot be reached however well you do. The calculator says so instead of showing an impossible number. When that happens you can spread the target over more semesters, or lower it.
The Formula
Current points = Previous Credits × Current CGPATarget points = (Previous Credits + Remaining Credits) × Target CGPARequired points = Target points − Current pointsRequired GPA = Required points ÷ Remaining CreditsA required GPA of 0 or less means you are already above your target. Any passing semester keeps you there. A figure above 4.00 means it cannot be done within the credit hours you have left on the COMSATS scale.
Worked Examples
Example 1: holding a CGPA close to the line
69 credit hours completed at a 3.72 CGPA, 19 credit hours left, aiming to finish at 3.69.
| Current total points | 3.72 × 69 = 256.68 |
|---|---|
| Target total points | 3.69 × 88 = 324.72 |
| Required points | 324.72 − 256.68 = 68.04 |
| Required GPA | 68.04 ÷ 19 = 3.58 |
Example 2: an unreachable target
88 credit hours completed at 2.90, only 15 credit hours left, aiming for 3.50.
| Current total points | 2.90 × 88 = 255.20 |
|---|---|
| Target total points | 3.50 × 103 = 360.50 |
| Required points | 360.50 − 255.20 = 105.30 |
| Required GPA | 105.30 ÷ 15 = 7.02 |
COMSATS University Islamabad Grading Scale
The required GPA above is given in COMSATS grade points, so it helps to know what each grade is worth. A 3.58 semester means averaging somewhere between a B+ and an A- across your courses.

|---|---|---|
| A | 85 and above | 4.00 |
| A- | 80 – 84 | 3.66 |
| B+ | 75 – 79 | 3.33 |
| B | 71 – 74 | 3.00 |
| B- | 68 – 70 | 2.66 |
| C+ | 64 – 67 | 2.33 |
| C | 61 – 63 | 2.00 |
| C- | 58 – 60 | 1.66 |
| D+ | 54 – 57 | 1.33 |
| D | 50 – 53 | 1.00 |
| F | Below 50 | 0.00 |
Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as 'previous credits' at COMSATS?
Every credit hour that already has a grade on your transcript and counts towards your CGPA. Use the total credit hours figure from your transcript instead of counting courses. COMSATS courses run from one to four credit hours, so counting courses gives you the wrong answer.
The calculator says I need a GPA above 4.00. What now?
That target is out of reach in the credit hours you have left, because COMSATS caps grade points at 4.00 per credit hour. You can spread the plan over more credit hours by counting next semester as well as this one, or lower the target. The calculator shows this as its own result rather than an impossible number.
Does this account for repeating a course to improve a grade?
Not automatically. If a repeat replaces an old grade under your department's policy, work out your current CGPA without the old attempt first, then plan from that figure. The calculator uses whatever current CGPA and completed credit hours you give it.
Should I plan one semester at a time or the whole degree?
Both are useful, and the formula is the same. Only the remaining credits change. One semester tells you what you have to do right now. The full remaining degree tells you whether the target is realistic at all. A target that looks impossible for one semester is often comfortable across three.
Why does the required GPA fall so fast as I add remaining credits?
Because the gap is spread over more credit hours. Needing 68 points across 19 credit hours means a 3.58 average. The same 68 points across 34 credit hours is only a 2.00 average. This is also why fixing a CGPA late in a degree is hard. There are fewer credit hours left to spread the gap over.
Is a required GPA below zero a bug?
No. It means your current CGPA is already comfortably above the target, so even a weak semester leaves you above it. The calculator treats that as its own result and tells you that you are already there, rather than showing a negative GPA.
